Improving Water Quality in an Existing Pond

This project, completed in 2025 in Rockford, Minnesota, focused on upgrading an existing pond and stream system with a 45-square-foot wetland filter. While the pond was already well established and surrounded by mature landscaping, the water clarity and overall ecosystem were no longer meeting the homeowner’s expectations. Our goal was to improve water quality for the fish while preserving everything the owners already loved about their pond.

Designing a Filter That Looks Natural

Rather than adding equipment that would stand out, we designed the wetland filter to blend seamlessly into the existing landscape. The stream was carefully shaped using natural stone, aquatic plants, and flowing water so it would appear to be a natural woodland stream rather than a biological filtration system. Today, it’s difficult to tell where the decorative stream ends and the filtration system begins.

Clear Water Today, Ready for Tomorrow

The finished wetland filter provides healthier water, improved biological filtration, and significantly reduced maintenance while enhancing the beauty of the entire pond. The homeowners were so pleased with the results that we’ve already designed the next phase of the project—a major expansion that could include a large swimming area in the future. The wetland filter now serves as the foundation for that long-term vision.
