Upper waterfall section with large natural boulders and integrated wetland filter in Ramsey, Minnesota
Introduction
This project was built in the backyard of a home in Ramsey, Minnesota, and holds special significance for our team. Several years after enjoying their first Minnesota Waterscapes pondless waterfall, the homeowners invited us back to create a second, larger water feature for their property.
The goal was to build a dramatic 40-foot pondless waterfall while incorporating a wetland filter and natural stream system that would provide excellent water quality with minimal maintenance.
Integrated wetland filter supplying water to a pondless waterfall system in Ramsey, Minnesota
Integrating the Wetland Filter
Unlike a standard pondless waterfall, this project incorporates a substantial wetland filter at the top of the system. The wetland improves water clarity, supports beneficial biological filtration, and helps keep maintenance requirements low.
The filter was designed to work seamlessly with the stream and waterfall, ensuring that water remains clean while preserving a natural appearance throughout the feature.
Excavation and reservoir construction for a pondless waterfall and wetland system in Ramsey, Minnesota
Construction Process
Building the reservoir and filtration components required significant excavation and careful coordination. One of the main challenges was the sandy soil conditions on site. Steep excavation walls and constantly shifting ground required precise planning, efficient execution, and careful staging of materials, all while minimizing the construction footprint and disturbance to the surrounding landscape.
Once the underground infrastructure was installed and the system was stabilized, the waterfall and stream could be shaped using large natural boulders selected to match the character of the surrounding landscape. Every stone was carefully positioned to create natural-looking cascades and a stream that appears to have developed naturally over time.

Creating Natural Cascades
The waterfall was designed with multiple drops and transitions to maximize both sound and visual interest. Large boulders create powerful cascades while smaller stones help soften transitions and guide water naturally through the stream.
The result is a water feature that feels established and timeless despite being newly constructed.

Conclusion
This project demonstrates how thoughtful design and experienced construction can overcome difficult site conditions while delivering a beautiful and reliable result. By combining a pondless waterfall, natural stream, and wetland filtration system, the homeowners received a feature that offers exceptional visual impact, excellent water quality, and years of low-maintenance enjoyment.
Reliable service and long-term support are an essential part of maintaining a healthy and beautiful pond ecosystem.
