This 6-foot pondless waterfall in Hopkins, MN is a complete rebuild — and a real-world example of what happens when water features are constructed without proper fundamentals.

The original system had been leaking for years. Once dismantled, the causes became clear: a liner that was too short, heavy stones compressing liner overlaps, and likely pressure from nearby tree roots. Temporary fixes had only delayed the failure.

We removed the entire feature, identified all failure points, and rebuilt the system correctly from the ground up.

System Teardown and Problem Identification

To properly address the ongoing leaks, the entire pondless waterfall system was fully dismantled. This step was critical to expose hidden problem areas that could not be identified from the surface.

Once opened, several key issues became immediately clear. The original liner was too short in critical areas, overlaps had been compressed by heavy stone placement, and sections of the system had shifted over time, likely due to surrounding root pressure.

During this stage we:

• removed all existing stone and gravel
• exposed and inspected the basin and stream structure
• identified liner failures and weak overlap points
• evaluated structural settling and drainage issues

This process allowed us to clearly define the root causes of failure and set the foundation for a proper, long-term rebuild.

A new one-piece liner was installed throughout the basin and stream to eliminate seams and prevent future leaks. Proper elevation and protection from stone pressure were critical to long-term system reliability.
