Existing Pond System

This backyard pond and stream system in Hastings, Minnesota was originally built more than 10 years ago. Over time, several common issues began to appear as the landscape and ecosystem evolved.

The fish population increased significantly — something the homeowners wanted to preserve — but the original filtration system was no longer sufficient to maintain optimal water quality. In addition, parts of the stream had gradually settled, which led to minor water loss and small leaks along the system.

Projects like this are very common with older ponds, where natural settling and increased biological load require filtration upgrades and structural adjustments.

Wetland Filter Installation

In 2024, we completed a major pond filtration upgrade by installing a 10×12 ft wetland filter. Wetland filtration systems are one of the most effective natural solutions for maintaining clean and balanced pond water, especially in ponds with a high fish population.

The new wetland filter dramatically increased the biological filtration capacity of the system, allowing the pond to maintain excellent water quality while supporting a healthy fish load.

This upgrade ensures long-term stability and significantly reduces maintenance compared to traditional filtration systems.

Stream Reconstruction and Leak Repair

Along with the wetland filter installation, we rebuilt several sections of the stream that had shifted over time. Our team carefully inspected the entire stream from top to bottom to locate and correct any structural problems.

During this process we:

  • rebuilt settled stream sections

  • corrected liner positioning

  • addressed areas of minor leakage

  • stabilized the stream structure

These improvements eliminated water loss and restored proper flow throughout the water feature.

Landscape and Lighting Improvements

As part of the renovation, we also upgraded several aesthetic and functional elements of the pond and stream.

Multiple broken and outdated lighting fixtures were replaced, improving both nighttime visibility and the overall ambiance of the water feature.

We also installed larger boulders throughout the stream. These additions improved structural stability while creating a more natural appearance that better integrates the water feature into the surrounding landscape.
